    4. Hi Edel,

Many thanks for this and for your contributions to the forums!

      Michelle

    5. Thanks for this Edel, yes its interesting that most teachers are using these activities however in a more incidental way. Great to hear that you are now going to incorporate them into your planning and that you have recognised the power of scaffolding!

      Well done!

    6. Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

Great to see you have recognised the power of recasting and indeed scaffolding children’s language and also the importance of your role in bridging the language between home and school.

      Well done!

    7. Many thanks for this Eleanor and for your forum contributions. Great to hear that going forward you plan to incorporate more reading aloud and explicitly teaching different types of sentences, often we assume children will pick up the structures from exposure alone, however explicit teaching is important to facilitate children’s learning.

Well done and enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    8. Hi Dairine,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

It is interesting to reflect on children who you would have taught in the past, and now view them through a new lens based on your new learning.

Well done and enjoy module 2!
      Michelle

    9. Hi Frances,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions!

Yes, teachers often do a lot of talking! So its good to get thinking about what opportunities are available to children to talk throughout the day, more often than not teachers weave these opportunities in incidentally, and as you say stronger students can sometimes to take over. Its good to carve out structured time for oral language, which is often well intended to do but sometimes doesn’t materialise as much as we would like for what ever reason!
I really like the reflection area for improvement you’ve identified, Its good to reflect and incorporate it into your daily/ weekly practice.
Well done and enjoy module 2!
      Michelle

    10. Hi Lorna,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions!

Yes it is interesting to be aware of the impact of low SES on oral language and language in general. Modelling, recasting and scaffolding are great strategies for assisting children to develop their oral language as well as explicit teaching of various grammatical and syntactic structures.

Well done and enjoy module 2!
      Michelle

    11. Hi Maria,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions!

Yes there are many components of language to consider when looking at a child’s communication, and also the links between communication difficulties and behaviour difficulties. Great to hear that you’re more confident will all of the components of language and also how language is assessed, there is more on this in the later modules!

Well done and enjoy module 2!
      Michelle

    12. Many thanks for this Harry and for your forum contributions.

      Enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    13. Hi ,

Many thanks for resubmitting this on the template and for your forum contributions.

Great to hear that you enjoyed hearing more about components of language and that you had an opportunity to explore them in more detail in module 1. Knowing the components of language will be a benefit when setting targets and goals for children.

Modelling and recasting children’s language is a powerful tool, and yes its good to adopt your models for different levels of ability within your classroom.

Many Thanks and enjoy Module 2!
      Michelle

    14. Hi Claire

Many thanks for resubmitting and amending your CPD log.

    16. Hello,
Many thanks for your assignment and for your forum postings!

Wow, 30 years teaching, you have a lot of experience under your belt! It is true that for various reasons we are seeing an increase in S&L difficulties in children, teachers spend everyday with he children so they have a lot to offer to the SLT which is very valuable when profiling a child’s communication.

Regarding SSE, Many thanks for your targets, they are all really good areas to concentrate on! Aoife Merrins has put up a fantastic post on the forum for SSE in Module one containing guidance on writing SMART targets, its well worth a read!

Many thanks and enjoy module 2!
      Michelle

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    23. Hi Dee,

Many thanks for this and I hope you have enjoyed module 1!

Yes, recognising speech delays or difficulties is far easier than recognising language difficulties, however with your new knowledge gained on this course we hope you will be feeling more confident in this area!
Great to hear that you’re planning on identifying ways you can further integrate oral language in your lesson plans going forward.

Oral language and genres are great points to include in your schools improvement plan. Aoife Merrins has a fantastic post in the Module one forum re: SMART goals, check this out for further learning and examples of SMART target areas for improvement for SSE.

Well done on completing module 1!

      Michelle

    24. Hi Dairine,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions for module 2!

Yes the collaborative approach to addressing the child’s needs is really key, working together with the parent is pivotal, and supporting them where you can, such as having the appointment letter sent to the school (with parental consent of course) can sometimes be the difference between a child attending or not attending an appointment!

re SSE all really great points to include in your schools improvement plan. If you haven’t already done so, check out Aoife Merrins post in the SSE forum from module 1 where she outlines how to create SMART targets for improvement.

Many thanks and enjoy module 3!
      Michelle

    25. Hi Fiona,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

I hope you have enjoyed module 1.

      Best Wishes,
      Michelle

    26. Hi Edel,

Many Thanks for this and your forum contribution to the SSE thread.

That’s great to hear that you’re feeling more confident about the identification and referral process. And yes gathering as much information as possible about a child’s profile is very helpful in both decision making about any potential referrals required or indeed for setting appropriate targets for the child.

Please now contribute to the forum thread in module 2 regarding identifying, referring and supporting children with SLCN.

Please share your thoughts on what you have learned about identifying, referring and supporting children with SLCN having completed Module 2.

Is there anything you’re going to do differently from now on?

Is there anything you wish you had of known previously?

What was your take home point from this module?

Once you have made your post in the forum I will be able to approve this assignment and you will be able to move to module 3.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    27. Hi Madeline,

thanks for this, please make your forum postings for module 2 in the module 2 threads and then I’ll be able to approve this assignment.

Well done on your SSE targets they are nicely constructed. If you haven’t already done so , check out Aoife’s post in the module 1 SSE thread for more information and examples of SMART targets.

Let me know when your forum posts for module 2 have been completed.

      Thanks,
      Michelle

    28. I converted this document to a Google Doc and saved it. Hopefully it copied correctly. I can upload in a different format if not.

    29. Hi Tess,

Many thanks for this and your forum postings, I hope you have enjoyed Module 1! There are plenty of practical classroom strategies and activities in later modules so hopefully you will get some good ideas from them!

Well done on selecting your SSE targets, all really good ideas and areas for improvement. If you haven’t already done so, check out Aoife Merrins post in the SSE forum from module 1 where she outlines how to create SMART targets and provide some examples.

Many Thanks and enjoy Module 2!

      Michelle

    30. Thanks Edel, I can see them now!

Well done on completing module 2, I hope you enjoy module 3!

      Thanks,
      Michelle

    31. Hi,

Many thanks for your assignment and for your forum postings!

I hope you have enjoyed module 2, it sounds like you have a great system already in place within your school for identifying and referring children with SLT difficulties.

RE your targets for improvement, that is a great idea to have the SLT dept come to present to your staff once a year.

If you haven’t already done so, check out Aoife’s post in the SSE forum from module 1 where she outlines how to create SMART targets for improvement. It may help you to formulate your ideas into SMART targets.

Many Thanks and enjoy module 3!

      Michelle

    32. Hi there,

      You are flying it!

Great to hear that you are already using so many of the activities and you can now add to your skills by adopting some of the strategies outlined in module 3. Semantic mapping is a powerful strategy to use with all children to aid them in developing their vocabulary skills. Great that you’re linking with parents and bridging activities between school and home.

Well done and I hope you enjoy module 4!

      Best Wishes,
      Michelle

    33. Hi Edel,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions!

Great to hear that you have enjoyed module one and found the topic of literate language interesting, it’s so important for teachers to be aware of bridging the gap between the language at home and at school. Explicit teaching of the more complex areas of language that you have described is indeed necessary.

Yes, the CsC tool is very useful!

Well done on your targets for improvements they are all great areas to focus on and very well structured.

Well done and enjoy Module 2!

      Michelle

    34. Hello,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

It sounds like your school has a really good structure in place for identifying, supporting and indeed referring children who have SLCN.

Well done on your targets for improvement, they are well structured and clear. The following auditory directions resource is very useful, great that you plan to incorporate it into your teaching going forward.

Many Thanks and I hope you enjoy module 3!

      Thanks,
      Michelle

    35. Hello,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions!

Yes its important to consider a child’s communication profile when they are exhibiting behavioural difficulties. Gathering evidence about the child’s strengths and weaknesses will help guide you in your decision making as to whether a referral is required.

Well done on your areas for improvement, as a senior teacher you will find module 4 of particular interest!

Well done and enjoy module 3!

      Michelle

    36. Hi Geraldine,

      Many thanks for this.

Great to hear that you enjoyed the the topic of literate language, its so important for teachers to be aware of bridging the gap between the language at home and at school.

re SSE all really great points to include in your schools improvement plan. If you haven’t already done so, check out Aoife post in the SSE forum from module 1 where she outlines how to structure the areas teachers identify for areas of improvement into SMART targets- well worth a read!

Can you now make your 2 posts to the forum for module 1? there are 2 threads one for each post.

Once that is completed I will be able to approve your assignment.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    37. Hi Maria/Orla(!)

I hope you have been enjoying the course so far!

Many thanks for this and for your forum postings.

Great to hear that you were happy with your practice in the past in approaching parents, sometimes it good to reflect and have that reaffirmed! Great to hear having completed module 2 that you’re now feeling more confident in this area and found the checklist for talking to parents useful.

Yes, more often than not a parent may believe a child will ‘grow out’ of their difficulties, or indeed the parent may be harbouring their own concerns and waiting for the teacher to bring it up with them, so its really important that teachers are confident in approaching this, and also equally confident in gathering the evidence about the childs communication profile. It’s good to test the water with parents to see where they’re at and then you’ll know how best to pitch your concerns.

Well done on your targets for improvement, bridging the gap between home and school by making parents aware of the language that is being taught in school is an excellent area to focus on.

All very good areas for improvement. If you haven’t already done so, have a look at Aoife’s post in the forum 1 module where she outlines examples of how to structure areas for improvement into SMART targets, some great information there!

Well done on completing module 2, lots of practical tips in module 3, I hope you enjoy it!

      Michelle

    38. Hi Claire,

Well done on completing module 2!

Sounds like you’re learnt a lot in this module particularly in the area of DLD! Yes its true 2 in every class of 30 may be presenting with DLD, and as it is a persistent communication difficulty it is really important that these children are identified early and supported with SLT and if they are suitable, referred to a language class for more intensive support.

Great to hear that you are more confident in making a referral to SLT also!

Well done on your targets for improvemnt, all great areas for improvement, I particularly like the suggestion of a session for all staff on how to refer to SLT- very practical.

If you haven’t already done so have a look at Aoife’s post in the forum 1 module where she outlines examples of how to structure areas for improvement into SMART targets, some great information there!

      Many thanks,
      Michelle

    39. Hi Dee,

Many thanks for this and your forum postings!

Great to hear having completed module 2 that you’re now feeling more confident in identifying and supporting a child with SLCN and also too recognising the power of visuals in supporting children with their communication!

Yes the collaborative approach to addressing the child’s needs is really key, working together with the parent is pivotal, and supporting them where you can, such as having the appointment letter sent to the school (with parental consent of course) can sometimes be the difference between a child attending, or not attending an appointment!

Aoife has made a comment on your target in the forum so be sure to check that out!

I am encouraging everyone to read through the forums and don’t be shy in replying to someone!

Many thanks and enjoy module 3!

      Michelle

    40. Hi Mary,

      Many thanks for this.

Great to hear that your knowledge of literate language has deepened and you recognise that explicit teaching of it is required.

Well done on identifying your areas for improvement! If you haven’t already done so check out Aoife’s post in the module 1 forum where she outlines examples of how to structure areas for improvement into SMART targets, some great information there!

All participants are required to make 2 forum posts for module, so once you have completed that i will be able to approve this assignment.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    41. Hi Eleanor,

Many thanks for this. Glad to hear that your feeling more confident about identifying SLCN concerns.

I’m afraid I have to ask you to review your CPD log, as this course is 20 hours in duration, with course videos, reflective exercises, reading forum posts, posting on the forum, self directed learning and assignments , it all adds up. Each module is approx four hours of learning, however you have documented 2.5 hours here, Can I ask you to review this and re-submit? Perhaps you forgot to include something mentioned above? I would highly recommend reading the forums to further your learning, particularly Aoife’s post in the module 1 forum regarding creating SMART targets.

Participants are also required to contribute 2 post to the forum for module 2. Can you go ahead and submit your posts to the module 2 forum?

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    42. Mary, I see you have made one post, if you can just post one target for improvement to the SSE thread in module 1 I will be able to approve your assignment,

      Thanks
      Michelle

    43. Hello,

Many thanks for this and for your 2 forum contributions!

I hope you have enjoyed module 1 so far. If you haven’t already done so take a look at Aoifes post in the SSE thread in module 1 where she outlines and gives examples on how to create SMART targets for SSE.

What you have done her for module 1 is perfect, however its good to start thinking of how to write SMART targets to help you plan areas for improvement going forward.

Best wishes and enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    44. Hi Paula,

      Many thanks for this!

Great to hear you are feeling more confident in referring children now having completed module2, well done also on your 2 areas for improvement, both excellent suggestions.

Can i ask you now to make your 2 forum posts in the module 2 forum and once that has been completed i will be able to approve this assignment and you’ll be able to progress to module3.

      https://www.cdi.ie/forums/forum/module-2-identifying-and-supporting-children-with-speech-and-language-needs-in-the-classroom/

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    45. Hi Lorna,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

Great to hear that through your reflection and learning from module 3 you are planning to focus more on certain aspects of PA that you may not have spent too much time on in the past.

Great idea to introduce more pair work for children to ask and answer questions about the book.

Well done on your areas for improvement.

Best wishes and I hope you enjoy module 4!

      Michelle

    46. Hi Mary,

I have found your 2nd comment , it was posted to the module 1 review of learning threat and not the SSE thread.

Your assignment has now been approved, I hope you enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    47. Hi Elaine,

Many thanks for this and for your 2 forum contributions.

Great to hear you’ve been able to learn more and indeed reflect on the classroom environment and how it can be structured to enhance language.

Well done on your targets for improvement, they read very well!

I hope you enjoy module 2!

      Best wishes,
      Michelle

    48. Sorry Michelle I tried to make 2 posts on the forum yesterday but they must not have saved. I’ve reposted them on the forum now. Thanks for letting me know.
      Paula

    49. Hi Dee,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions for module 3!

Great work here and great ideas to bring with you into your teaching going forward!

Best wishes and enjoy module 4!

      Michelle

    50. Hi Dairine,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions for module 3!

TPR to develop PA would work really nicely for the infant classes, and bridging the learning between home and school would certainly reinforce the learning and enable parents to become involved in their child’s learning.

The SEEC model is a great framework for teaching vocabulary, glad you found it useful.

Well done on your areas for improvement also, I hope you enjoy module 4!

      Michelle

    51. Hi Roisin,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions for module 1. If you haven’t already done so check out Aoife’s post in the module 1 forum thread where she talks about EAL, she is currently studying for her PHD in this area so use the forums to ask her questions in this area if you’d like to learn more about supporting children with EAL.

Well done on identifying your targets for improvement, all great areas to focus on, check out Aoifes post in the module 1 SSE thread where she outlines how to create SMART targets and provides examples.

Best wishes and enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    52. Well done on your lesson plan and thank you for your forum contribution.

I hope you enjoy module 5.

      Best wishes,
      Michelle

    53. Sorry, I have done that now. I couldn’t see the course forum link.
      Thanks
      Ruth

    54. Perfect, thanks Ruth!

The forum link comes up in the side bar on the left when you click into a module, or in the top right there is a person icon and the forums are in the drop down.

Many thanks and enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    55. Hi there,

Many thanks for this, I can’t see your posts in the module 3 forum….can you make your contributions and let me know once completed?

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    56. Hi Michelle,
Apologies. I had forgotten to do my posts to the forum. I have completed my 2 posts just now.
      Thank you,
      Karen.

    57. Time Spent on the online learning platform: 1hr 45min
Time spent during self directed learning :1hr Reading (note taking)
      Time spent completing assignments: 45mins
      Total: 3hrs 30 mins approx

Apologies I forgot to fill in times.
      Ruth

    58. Hi Jenny,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions, i’m going to approve this assignment, however can i ask you to expand on your forum post. Please share how your understanding of speech and Language has developed having completed module 1. What was your key learning point? you can take snippits from your assignment to answer this question.

Well done on completing module 1, i hope you enjoy module 2,

      Michelle

    59. Hi Ellen,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

I have read through your handout and have some feedback for you:
-Try to incorporate some visuals into the hand out and space out the text in order to make it visually appealing for the reader.
-beware of jargon terms parents may not know what ‘scaffolding’ means
-try to give clear examples- you mention questioning as a strategy for reading, however you have not provided an example of this strategy- therefore parents may not know how to try it out etc
      – you have given a clear example in no 2, but again have used the term ‘scaffold’
in no 3 you mention 3 games -What am I?, Think of Three, 5 seconds- however you don’t explain to parents how to play these games, you have assumed shared knowledge of these games , however there may be some parents that don’t know what or how to play these games….

Just some things to think about for your handouts going forward.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    60. Thanks for this, i see you have a post up on the forum re support for EAL children with regards to PA. Aoife will be on the forums tonight and will reply to you!

      Thanks, and enjoy module 4!

      Michelle

    61. Hi Tess,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

Unfortunately I cannot open this attachment, can you re-submit as a PDF?

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    62. Hi Juliet,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions, (yes you are doing them correctly ;-)!

Yes the collaborative approach to addressing the child’s needs is really key, working together with the parent is pivotal, and supporting them where you can. It’s good to test the water with parents to see where they’re at and then you’ll know how best to pitch your concerns.

Great work on your targets for improvement, if you haven’t already done so, have a look at Aoife’s post in the module one SSE thread where she outlines examples of creating SMART targets- well worth a read.

Well done on completing module 2!

I hope you enjoy module 3,
      Michelle

    63. Having completed this first module on Supporting Speech and Language Development in the classroom, I can appreciate the importance of early interventions and referrals in light of the facts presented with regard to negative impact of language difficulties on Social/Emotional Development, Learning, Behaviour and Friendships Skills.
In the light of this, I can see benefit in targetting many aspects of Language: Sequencing/Narrative Skills being an area I would target initially

    64. Hi Michelle,

Thanks for your reply and apologies for that. I’ll upload a PDF of it. Do you have to delete this one? I don’t have the option to upload another document for this Module while it’s still there I think?

      Thanks,

    65. Hi Therese,

You should be able to delete or remove your assignment from the box and upload another one, let me know how you get on!

      THanks,
      Michelle

    66. Hi Michelle,

I’ve gone back in a few times and there’s no option to delete it that I can see? Nor is there the option to upload anything else. It just says awaiting approval.

      Please advise?

      Thanks,
      Therese

    67. Hello,

      Many thanks for this.

Each participant is required to make 2 contributions to the forum for module 1:
the first forum is here: https://www.cdi.ie/forums/topic/how-has-your-understanding-of-speech-and-language-developed/

and the second one is the SSE thread located here: https://www.cdi.ie/forums/topic/school-self-evaluation/

With regard to SSE well done in identifying your targets, for subsequent modules try to expand on them and make them into SMART targets, see Aoife’s post in the module one SSE thread where she explains this and provides examples.

Let me know when you have made your forum postings,
      Thanks,
      Michelle

    68. Hi Michelle,
I have completed those two forum posts
      Thanks,
      Josephine phillips

    69. Well done on your lesson plan, I particularly like the compare and contrast element between English and Irish syntax!

Well done on completing module 4, I hope you enjoy module5!

      Michelle

    70. Hi Emma,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions.

Great that you’re planning on incorporate more student talk time going forward.

Just a note on your CPD log, this course is 20 hours in duration, with course videos, reflective exercises, reading forum posts, posting on the forum, self directed learning and assignments , it all adds up. Each module is approx four hours of learning, however you have documented 3.5 hours here, going forward can you ensure that it is 4 hours +, I would highly recommend reading the forums to further your learning.

Many Thanks and enjoy module 2!
      Michelle

    71. Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

Great to see that you now feel that you have a greater understanding of language and literacy acquisition.

Well done on completing module 3.
      Many thanks,
      Alice.

    72. Hi James,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

Great to see that you have a greater knowledge of speech and language in the classroom – particularly literate language after module one.

Thanks for both points included in your schools improvement plan, both are good ideas for inclusion. Aoife has a fantastic post in the Module one forum re: SMART goals, check this out for further learning and examples of SMART target areas for improvement for SSE.

Well done on completing module 1.
      Many thanks,
      Alice.

    73. Hi there,

It’s great to see that you aim to build on strategies that you are already using in the classroom to support vocabulary, phonological awareness and grammar.

Many thanks for your assignment and forum posts.

      Enjoy Module 4!

      Alice.

    74. Hi there,

Many thanks for this and your forum posts.

Can you please revise your CPD log? Participants are expected to spend approximately 4 hours on each module before progressing to the next module.

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    75. Hi there,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

Great to see your knowledge of the importance of literate language has developed in module one.

Thanks for your great suggestions for your school improvement plan. Aoife has a fantastic post in the Module one forum re: SMART goals, check this out for further learning and examples of SMART target areas for improvement for SSE.

RE: CPD log – participants are expected to spend approximately 4 hours of learning per module. Please be aware of this moving forward.

Well done on completing module 1!

      Thanks,

      Alice

Please outline the time you have spent on this module:
Time Spent on the online learning platform 4 hours

Q1. I have referred at least one child in my class each year to a SLT.  Teaching classes of 30 meant I had at least one child already attending and one needing referral as I teach seniors and 1st class.  This has been steep learning – finding out how to refer, completing several forms, what evidence to collect, how to communicate with parents, what to look for in class, etc.  This module has been excellent in giving a complete overview of this process.  The notes on communicating with parents were great.  It has been good to see that the way I’ve done things is in line with best practice – I got advice from SETs etc along the way.  But it’s also great to have the checklist from the Trust to use to prepare for future meetings.  It has also been hugely beneficial to find out about language classes and the application process, etc.  I also found it very interesting to note that children presenting with behaviour/emotional difficulties should be referred to SLT for assessment too – this makes complete sense and is something that needs to be added to our policy.  It’s good to see that the classroom strategies are ones that I’ve been putting into practice – I need to add a visual timetable to my strategies and take care with the language I use.  Overall, a very helpful module.  Word Count: 220

Q2. To keep clear, ongoing observation notes in a consistent way.  Particularly with children for whom I have concerns – building up an evidence bank.

To carry out whole class checks to develop and monitor ability to follow directions using the ‘Following Auditory Directions’ book.
Discuss at Croke Park session with staff how to communicate with parents about children with SLC development and SLCNs using the communication trust resources as a stimulus for conversation.
Add classroom strategies to those already in place – visual timetable, checking for understanding not just likes when reading stories, consider the language I use in class and make sure it’s clear, etc.
Update the school’s special needs policy to include clear procedures for what to do when a teacher has concerns about a child’s SLCD.
Prepare resources for parents with a list of further resources or places where a parent can find further information if they wish to.  This is something I have not done so far.  I would usually meet parents informally and formally and complete the referral and leave that further information to the SLT with the exception of practical resources to help the child. I think it would be great if I had contacts ready for parents too of organisations/websites they can go to for further information too.    Word Count: 214

    78. Hi Paula,

Well done on your lesson plan, it is well thought out and contains lots of activities, I hope you get to use it now, or if you’re not teaching senior classes this year, share it with a colleague!

I hope you have been enjoying the course so far, glad to hear you’re more confident in using the comprehension strategies with senior classes now too!

Best wishes and Enjoy module 5!

      Michelle

    79. Hello,

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions, I hope you have been enjoying the course so far.

Well done on your targets for improvement, the first one in particular is very SMART (check out Aoifes post in the forum 1 SSE thread for more on this)

Happy talk is a super programme and would be lovely for infants!

Well done and enjoy module 2

      Michelle

    80. Well done on completing module 3, I hope you enjoy module 4!

    82. Hi Elaine,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions. It’s great to hear you now have a greater knowledge around phonological awareness terminology – it can be confusing!

Well done on completing module 3!

      Thanks,

      Alice

    83. Hi Therese,

Many thanks for this, and sorry you were having problems with the template and uploading. There is a template for every module so be sure to download that for each module!

Great that you found the overview of the referral process useful and also great to affirm your practice with parents in the past has been inline with best practice, well done!

Well done on completing module 1, and enjoy module 2!

      Michelle

    84. Hi Ellen,

    87. Hi K,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

Great to see you have included lots of fun, practical ways to target phonological awareness activities at school and home.

Well done on completing module 3!

      Many thanks,

      Alice

    88. Hi Harry,

Many thanks for this, as a former student of linguistics myself i understand why you have suggested outlining the anatomy and physiology of how to produce sound, but it is not necessary at primary level to go into that detail. As an SLT myself i would only go into that detail with adults who have had a stroke or who present with motor speech disorders.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the course and it is complementing your learning as a linguistic student.

      Best Wishes,
      Michelle

    89. Hi Therese,

Many thanks for this, all good with your assignment, PDF is the way to go as myself and the other tutors
      are working from word.

Can I ask you to make your contributions to the module 3 forum? Once that has been completed I will be able to approve your assignment.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    90. Hi Ellen,

Many thanks for this and for you forum contributions.

I’m afraid I have to ask you to review your CPD log, as this course is 20 hours in duration, with course videos, reflective exercises, reading forum posts, posting on the forum, self directed learning and assignments , it all adds up. Each module is approx four hours of learning, however you have documented 2 hours.55 minutes here, Can I ask you to review this and re-submit? Perhaps you forgot to include something mentioned above?

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    91. Hi Juliet,

Well done on completing module 3, i hope you enjoy module 4!

      Best Wishes,

Thank you for providing a very helpful and informative course.

    96. Well done on your lesson plan and on completing module 4, i hope you have enjoyed it!

      Now for module 5……
      Michelle

    97. Hi Geraline

Many thanks for your assignment and for your 2 Forum posts for Module 2.

You made some very relevant points about empowering parents and approaching parents as soon as concerns arise. Also your comments around highlighting the attendance policy for SLT to parents is very important also.

Well done and enjoy Module 3!

    98. Hi Rose

Many thanks for your two Forum contributions and your assignment. Your points about giving enough time to language as part of everyday teaching were particularly insightful and your plans for the whole school approach were well laid out.

Well done and enjoy Module 2!
      Kind regards
      Alison

    99. Hi Josph,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

Can I ask you to have another look at section 2 of this assignment and then re submit please? Question 2 states “specify in another 150 words 2-3 targets for improvement which will contribute to your schools improvement plan” focusing on speech and language targets. Aoife has a fantastic post in the Module one forum re: SMART goals, check this out for further learning and examples of SMART target areas for improvement for SSE.

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    100. Hi Steph

Thank you for completing your 2 Forum posts and assignment.

Delighted to hear that you found the videos helpful for giving ways to shape those difficult conversations with parents. Your school targets were also very appropriate.

Well done and enjoy Module 3.

      Thanks
      Alison

    101. Hi Mary,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

Great to see the importance of reinforcing new vocabulary being noted as a key learning point from module 2.

Creating greater awareness of DLD is a good point to include in your schools improvement plan. DLD awareness day takes palce each October, radld.org has great resources you may like to have a look at. Aoife has a fantastic post in the Module one forum re: SMART goals, check this out for further learning and examples of SMART target areas for improvement for SSE.

Well done on completing module 2!

      Many thanks,
      Alice.

    102. Hi Sarah

Thank you for your assignment and your two forum contributions.

Well done and hope you enjoy module 2.

      Thanks
      Alison

    103. Hi Michelle,

Thank you for your response. Where can I adjust my CPD log? I have done so on my assignment task word doc but not sure how I can upload it again?

      Kate

    104. Hi Elaine

Thanks for your assignment and Forum contribution. Your lesson plan was very comprehensive and well thought out.

Now onto the last module, number 5!

      Thanks
      Alison

    105. Thank you for your assignment and forum contribution. Your lesson plan was very comprehensive and well thought out. Well done!

    107. Hi Claire

Well done on completing a very comprehensive and well thought out lesson plan for your assignment, and for your forum contribution.

I hope you enjoy module 5!
      thanks
      Alison

    108. Hi Ellie

Thank you for submitting your first assignment and 2 forum contributions. You have highlighted very relevant learning about the difference between home school language and home language, which is particularly relevant in DEIS schools.

I’m afraid I have to ask you to review your CPD log. As this course is 20 hours in duration, with course videos, reflective exercises, reading forum posts, posting on the forum, self directed learning and assignments , it all adds up. Each module is approximately four hours of learning, however you have documented 1 hour. Can I ask you to review this and re-submit? Perhaps you forgot to include something mentioned above? I would highly recommend reading the forums to further your learning, particularly Aoife’s post in the module 1 forum regarding creating SMART targets.

Once this is complete I’ll be able to approve this module.
      thanks
      Alison

    109. Hi Alison,

Apologies. I meant to update the time logged. I subsequently spent a number of hours reading the additional material ( which I didn’t realise was there in the beginning), reading through the forum and then formulating my own answers. Completely forgot to update that part. Is it possible for me to do so at this stage?
Also, really enjoyed the first module! Really insightful and informative!

      Many thanks,

      Ellie

    110. Hi Alice,
i accept that i mistakenly only identified 1 target instead of 2 -3. However, I feel that writing is a form of expressive language as identified in Module 1and therefore should be acceptable as area of Language being addressed in the targets
Please explain further as I am confused at this stage.
      Thanks,
      Josephine Phillips

    111. Hi Edel

Excellent work on this module Edel. Hope you enjoy Module 3.

      thanks
      Alison

    112. Hi Ellie

No problem at all- it’s an easy mistake to make. Can you just outline here by replying to this post your number of hours CPD (time spent and activities) and when I get that, I’ll approve the module for you.

Glad you’re enjoying the course so far! If you have any other queries let me know.
      thanks
      Alison

    113. Well done on completing Module 4. Your lesson plan was very comprehensive.

Now onto Module 5- you’re nearly there!
      thanks
      Alison

    114. Hi,
I have added another target as requested to Q2. i am now having technical problem re submitting same. I don’t see an option for re submitting and it won’t accept use of existing link to assignment template as previously.
      Please help,
      Josephine Phillips

    115. Hi Roisin,

Many thanks for part one of the assignment and your forum post.

Could you please complete part two of the assignment and contribute to the forum “School Self Evaluation” in order for your assignment to be approved?

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    116. Hello, I am having issues removing the first document as replacing it with the correct assignment. I have copied and pasted the answer to question two with this comment. I had also already commented on the forum in the ‘School Self Evaluation’ section.

Target 1: The importance of teaching a child to monitor and assess their own understanding.
We currently use a traffic light system to monitor understanding. However, I don’t think that the children are ever explicitly taught, what it mean to understand a lesson. I think that I will begin to use my WALT and WILF more actively as a basis for teaching the children to self-assess their understanding. Using thumbs is a much less disruptive way of the children sharing how they found the lesson and it would give me a very quick assessment of who needs more input or a different activity to consolidate their learning.

Target 2: Modify instructions given to the children.
I need to become more aware of the specific language I am using and modify the directions given to the children. The children firstly need to be explicitly taught this language, it needs to be actively modeled and then an expectation of the children following through can be set.
      Word Count: 164

    117. Hi Roisin,

Thank you for posting your assignment here. Module 2 is now approved. I hope you enjoy module 3!

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    118. Hi Josph,

Many thanks for amending your original assignment – could you post part two here as a response to this comment?

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    119. Q2
I completed a fantastic CPD course last year titled ‘Assessment for Learning’ (CPD College) and I found the approaches recommended therein hugely beneficial in engaging a small group of children with assessing their own learning, identifying their achievements and indicating areas in need of improvement whilst simultaneously giving them a sense of pride in their work and associated progress. Now, looking through the ‘Looking At Our Schools 2016’ publication, I can see clearly how this aforementioned approach ties in really well with Domain 2 – Learner Experiences (p16):
‘Students assess their progress realistically and can describe their strengths and areas for development as learners. They have a sense of ownership of their work, take pride in it, and take responsibility for improving it.
I would be interested in extending this approach, therefore, to a whole class setting in light of my positive experience with it combined with the recommendations within the ‘Looking At Our Schools 2016’ document. our school plan could therefore incorporate
      the following targets :
      1. Children in 2nd Class will engage in AFL approach when learning to orally compose sentences using a noun, verb and adjective whilst maintaining meaning on 4/5 occasions before end of first term when working independently.
      2. Children in 3rd Class will engage in peer AFL approach when learning to narrate a story orally incorporating story elements: Setting, Character/s, Plot, Resolution/Conclusion on 2/3 occasions within the first term..

    246. Hi there,

Many thanks for this and your forum contributions.

I really like the idea of a “Chit Chat” corner included in your schools improvement plan. Aoife has a fantastic post in the Module one forum re: SMART goals, check this out for further learning and examples of SMART target areas for improvement for SSE.

Well done on completing module 1.

      Many thanks,
      Alice.

    247. I found this module very useful to my practice. I have realised that I do not focus enough on Oral Language in my teaching, as I was integrating it in other areas. I now realise how important it is to have direct and explicit Oral Language Lessons. I enjoyed learning about more enjoyable ways of teaching grammar to children, as this is an area that I find challenging to make interesting for the students that I teach. I will definitely be trying these games for teaching grammar going forward in my teaching.
Furthmore, I enjoyed the idea of using a multi-sensory approach to teach grammar, and will be using this in my practice going forward, to make teaching and learning of grammar more interesting to the children.
I have heard of “Words Their Way” through my specialism in college. However, I only focused on this strategy to teach words with similar sounds. I feel much more assured about using this to teach root words. An activity that I would use in word study (after reading back over lecture notes) is to turn word study activities focusing on root words into games, such as speed sorting.

    248. Hi Emma,

This course is 20 hours in duration, with course videos, reflective exercises, reading forum posts, posting on the forum, self directed learning and assignments , it all adds up. Each module is approx four hours of learning. This is the CPD hours log you are required to fill in, can you copy the template below, fill it in and paste as a comment?

Please outline the time you have spent on this module:
Time Spent on the online learning platform
Time spent during self directed learning
      Time spent completing assignments
      Other
      Total:

      Best,

      Alice

    249. Hi Deirdre,

Many thanks for this, can you now make two posts to the module three forum in order to fulfil criteria for this module?

      Best,

      Alice

    250. Hi Steph,

      Hi there,

Many thanks for this, well done on your activities, they are nicely explained.

Please ensure you complete your reflective learning assignment and post course evaluation.

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    251. Specify in another 150 words 2-3 targets for improvement which will contribute to your schools improvement plan.

One area which I feel needs to be part of our school improvement plan is for all staff to be aware of how to identify students with SLCN. I also feel it is very important for all staff to view the video of consulting parents if there are concerns about a student.
There is a lack of implementation of strategies to support students with SLCN in the classroom. SET’s are expected to do all the work and draw up student support files. This year, I have had no input from class teachers when drawing up targets and strategies for students with SLCN.

A second area for improvement in our school plan is to teach topic specific vocabulary before lessons. As mentioned above, this will mean more collaboration with class teacher and SET.

    252. Hi Dana

Thanks for your email. I have now reviewed your 2 comments on the Forum 2 posts, that’s perfect. Many thanks for completing this.

      Kind regards
      Alison

    253. Hi

Thanks for part one of your assignment, your handouts have some great ideas for parents.

Unfortunately I don’t see part two of the assignment which has to be posted on the Module 5 Forum. If I have overlooked this, please let me know.

Contribute your thoughts on this to the forum.
*For this module you are required to contribute your answer to part 2 of this task to the module 5 forum*

Once you have posted this, let me know by replying here so we can progress your work.

      Many thanks

      Hope you enjoy Module 4.

      Thanks
      Alison

    262. Hi

Many thanks on completing your assignment and forum post. You have some very nice ideas for the handout. A couple of things that struck me from your Handout- I would suggest using some visuals and just be aware that parents often need explicit instructions as we can’t assume that they have prior knowledge of things like Mind Maps. So in that example, perhaps you could explain what exactly a Mind Map is and use a visual example to reinforce this.

      Many thanks,
      Alison.

    263. Hi Stephanie,

Many thanks for this & congratulations on completing the course!

I hope you have a lovely summer.

    266. Hi Ruth ,

Many thanks for this, great work on your hand out, some nice clear examples of activities for parents there, the only improvement I would suggest would be to include some visuals to make it more visually appealing for the reader.

Don’t forget to add you post on SSE to the module 5 forum.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    267. Hi Victoria,

    273. Hi
Many thanks for this. Glad to hear that your feeling more confident about identifying SLCN concerns and setting a clear pathway within your school.

I’m afraid I have to ask you to review your CPD log, as this course is 20 hours in duration, with course videos, reflective exercises, reading forum posts, posting on the forum, self directed learning and assignments , it all adds up. Each module is approximately four hours of learning, however you have documented 2.5 hours here, Can I ask you to review this and re-submit? Perhaps you forgot to include something mentioned above? I would highly recommend reading the forums to further your learning, particularly Aoife’s post in the module 1 forum regarding creating SMART targets.

    307. Hi Emma

Excellent work on your handout- it’s really clear eye catching, nice simple language. Your point on the forum about collaborative working is also great. It sounds like you’ve got a really supportive staff group and this can be maximised by working together with parents to support communication and learning needs. Well done!

      Thanks
      Alison

    308. Thank you for submitting your assignment and Forum contribution. Your handout for parents is excellent- really clear, simple, language and great idea to use visuals to support the vocabulary too.

      Well done!
      Alison

    309. Hi Oonagh

Many thanks for your assignment, Forum contribution and CPD log. Your handout has some good ideas- I particularly think class visits for parents will be so valuable.

A couple of things stuck me when reading your handout- just be mindful to keep your language simple for parents and use visuals where possible to make it reader friendly. Your Activity 2 is a good example of this.

Also, be aware of citing long links to websites as they can be difficult to access- I wasn’t able to open one of the links in your Activity 1, and parents may not all have access to printers, so it might be easier to print out or highlight key points.

However, you have some great ideas about collaborative working with parents overall. Well done.
      Thanks
      Alison

    310. Hi Aiden

I’m going to approve this module so that you can move onto the next one, however please re-submit your module 1 assignment for review.

      Many Thanks,
      Michelle

    316. Hi Mairead

Thanks for completing your forum posts and assignment. Your assignment is excellent- you have really taken on board the terminology and the ideas to support parents collaboratively with your colleagues. Well done!

Hope you enjoy the next module.
      thanks
      Alison

    317. Hi

Many thanks for your assignment and Forum Contributions. Yes raising concerns about expressive and receptive language can be much for difficult for parents. It’s great that you can draw on a wealth of experience to support them with sensitivity.

Supporting parents whilst they await SLT input is important too. I see that you were looking for suggestions/ signposting for resources. For activities/ homepacks for parents, the Communication Trust website is excellent, so have a look on there for ideas: https://www.thecommunicationtrust.org.uk/media/3163/postcards_pre_school_final.pdf

In terms of your question about the video and lists- why don’t you put that question in the Forum here as it might be helpful for others also:
      https://www.cdi.ie/forums/topic/ask-the-authors-questions-from-module-2/

Hope that helps. Well done on completing Module 2. Enjoy Module 3.
      Thanks
      Alison

    318. Hi

Many thanks for this and your forum contribution.

Great work on your lesson plan.

Well done on completing module 4, I hope you enjoy the final module.

      Many thanks,

      Alice.

    319. Hi James,

Thanks for this, I’m glad you found lots of useful ideas in module 3. I’m afraid part two of your assignment appears to be missing, can you please review this and then submit part two here as a comment? Can you also please then make your forum contribution to the “School Self Evaluation” forum for module 3?

Part two of the assignment is “With regard to SSE: Review Domain 2-3 :Learner experiences and teachers individual experiences. Refer to page 15-19 in Looking at Our School 2016 A Quality Framework for Primary/Post-Primary Schools. Outline in 150 words 2-3 targets for improvement which will contribute to your schools improvement plan. Contribute one of your targets to the online forum. ”

      Many thanks,

      Alice

    322. Hi Ellen

Many thanks for your assignment and Forum contributions. You have some very good ideas about ways to identify children with SLCN and accessing services. The idea of having a folder that all teachers can access to see templates of referrals and resources for support is excellent.

Well done, hope you enjoy the next Module.
      Thanks
      Alison

    323. Hi Alice, Sorry about that. Here is the rest of the assignment. Many thanks, James.

Targets for improvement that will contribute to my schools improvement plan are
      1. Using Big Books/Picture books (once a week) as a learning tool for oral language development. This will not only help with listening skills but also with vocabulary development and grammar focusing on verbs, nouns, adjectives identification and with forming more grammatically correct complex sentences. Story based activities will allow to focus on prediction, categorization, inference and analysis.
      2. To have a more structured approach to the teaching of grammar. I will suggest to the staff in the school about the PDST resource available called ‘Suggested Grammar Topics for each class Level’. Also, the List of Grammar Topics for each year group is a very useful checklist, especially for me as the EAL teacher covering all year groups. The site is also rich in activities.
      3. Creating a link between school and home languages. Getting the children to act as teacher at home with parents/siblings. Give the students fun activities to take home that will improve the standard of parent’s English at home (many have minimal English). By teaching parents English and also speaking in their home language Romanian, this in turn will reinforce their own learning.

    324. Hi,
Would it be possible to contact one of the course moderator’s privately? I have a question about the assignment in module 4.
      Thanks,
      Elaine.

    340. Hi

Many thanks for your assignment and Forum post. You have some great ideas for the parent handout. Just remember to be explicit when making handouts for parents- they may not know what an adjective is, so perhaps explain with a description and a few examples first.

      Thanks
      Alison

    341. Many thanks for this and your forum contributions, great to see that although you had a good knowledge base in the various areas prior to the course you have been able to extend and develop your knowledge further in all of the areas covered in module 3.

Well done on setting your SMART target!

      Enjoy module 4,
      Michelle

    342. Hello,

Many thanks for this! Great to hear how your learning has developed having completed module 1.

      Rolf reflection:
What?: In this module I have learned that there is a strong correlation between behaviour and emotional regulation and speech and language difficulties. When children cannot express themselves easily they become frustrated and as a result they may act out.

Now what?: As a result of this I think, as a special education teacher and as a school, we should keep to the forefront of our mind is there an underlying, undiagnosed speech and language difficulty that needs to be addressed because this could be at the root of the child’s emotional and/or behavioural problems, especially in the infant classes.

So what? I will do this by explaining to the staff at our Croke Park hour before school begins in September about the strong link between speech and language difficulties and emotional and behavioural difficulties.

Target: Staff will be made aware of the link between emotional/ behavioural problems and speech & language difficulties at a staff meeting at the beginning of the academic year. If a child presents with behavioural difficulties we will include the investigation of speech & language difficulties (whether receptive or expressive or both) as part of finding the root cause of the child’s difficulties and coming up with a behaviour modification plan. Class teachers will be made aware of strategies to aid children’s receptive or expressive language such as visual prompts, asking a child to repeat directions. We will review in February 2021 what positive impact this will have on children’s improvement in behaviour.

    382. Target 2:
What? I have learned that the language children use at home is different to the language they use at school.

Now what? As a school, we need to target the teaching of language specific to school.

So what? We need to develop a list of words, similar to what we did with the language of maths, that will teach the language of school, especially to infants.

Target: In September I will meet with the infant teachers to draw up a list of common language specific to school e.g. halla, queue, recycling bin, am lóin, pod, next, after, before etc. The class infant teachers will then begin to specifically teach this vocabulary and use visual prompts, as appropriate. We will review after term one to see if the establishment of this practice has improved children’s ability to follow directions, settle in or improve behaviour.

    383. Hi there,

      *Making Connections
      *Questioning
      *Clarifying

Speech and Language considerations – Children will be supported until they are confident in reading aloud (teacher could work with some small groups/individuals to practise before they read in front of the class).

      Planning and Preparation

List of debate topics/key questions –computer games are good for you; The school holidays should be made shorter; It is possible for two people to be exactly the same; One day, computers will replace teachers; Wild Animals should be kept in the Zoo.

Sentence Starters: It is clear that.. Clearly.. Everyone knows that.. Of course.. There is no doubt.. Surely..

During brainstorm – select most important words for everyone to understand.

      Teaching and Learning
      Starter:
Walking debate; present the children with a number of statements. Each time they will get a chance to choose if they agree/disagree/unsure. One/two children could be asked to contribute reasons for their choices; teacher could note key words used during discussion.

      Development:
Present the children with the topic of today’s debate; ‘Are school uniforms a good idea?’

      Whole Class brainstorm: topic words
Explore key words (persuasive writing sentence starters, language, conclusions)

Children will split into small groups and each group will be assigned a for/against stance to take on the motion.

Groups are given time to compile an argument based on their motion. Each person will speak – one person will introduce, another will present arguments, last person will conclude.

      Conclusion:
Children are given feedback on debates – what could we do differently next time? (could we include research and facts?)

Many thanks for this and for your forum contributions. Its great to hear how your understanding of speech and language has developed as a result of this module.

Your SSE targets are very appropriate. If you haven’t already done so, have a look at Aoifes post in the module 1 sse thread regarding SMART targets and try your hand at a SMART target for your SSE targets for improvement in module2!

      Best wishes,
      Michelle

Could you please add your post to the Module 5 Forum:
With regard to SSE, Review Domain 2 and 4: Teachers collective/ collaborative practice. Refer to page 30-31 in Looking at Our School 2016 A Quality Framework for Primary/Post-Primary Schools. Many thanks for your assignment and forum post. Your handout has some lovely ideas. Just remember that SLT operates an open referral policy- so parents, teachers etc can all refer, so I think this could be made a bit clearer on your handout. Parents can sometimes be put off by thinking they need to make a GP visit first.

      Thanks
      Alison

Specify in another 150 words 2-3 targets for improvement which will contribute to your schools improvement plan. Contribute one of your targets to the forum.

Can you please add it into the comment below?

    479. Reflecting on the SSE content in relation to this module, I feel strongly that it is important that the research provided regarding Deis schools and student performance around language instruction in those settings is of paramount importance to my school. One key area for improvement would be the collaboration among staff to produce relevant tiers of vocabulary. This could be divided between Junior and Senior staff teachers. The Infant teachers could focus on the Aistear Themes and make sure that there is continuity between year groups. The Seniors could focus on SESE topics. Another key target for our school would be the importance of teaching phonological awareness. The fact that children with a phonological disorder are at a high risk of developing literacy difficulties was particularly relevant as children from areas of social deprivation have weaker phonological skills. The emphasis on teaching phonological awareness before phonics instruction in these settings especially, was very revealing. Maybe we could use our SET team to provide in class support to teach it at a designated phonological awareness station by replacing an independent station during reading group time.
