CDI’s Speech, Language and Communication Summer Course builds teachers skills and confidence in addressing speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) of primary school students. Approved by the Department of Education and Skills (DES), it is a 20-hour course that can be completed between July 3rd and August 18th at your own pace.

This Summer Course is unique. It merges the disciplines of speech and language therapy (SLT) and primary teaching to provide practical information, tools and activities for mainstream and support teachers.

Who is it for?

This course is open to all primary school teachers – mainstream and support teachers, newly qualified and experienced.

The course also integrates consideration of social deprivation which may be of particular interest to DEIS school teachers.

What will I learn?

Module 1 

Understanding and Supporting Speech and Language Development in the Classroom

Through reflective practice, this module introduces language, its centrality to daily classroom life, its components and language learning contexts.

Module 2 

Identifying and Supporting Children with Speech and Language Needs in the Classroom

Explores speech, language and communication needs typically present in primary classes and presents strategies to support children with speech, language and communication needs.

Module 3 

Evidence-Based Practice in Language Instruction in Junior Classes

Provides practical information and demonstrates activities for junior classes’ teachers in the areas of phonological awareness, vocabulary, grammar and comprehension to support all children within the classroom, and children with speech, language and communication needs.

Module 4 

Evidence-Based Practice in Language Instruction in Senior Classes (3rd– 6th class)

Provides practical information and demonstrates activities for teachers related to vocabulary, grammar and comprehension to support all children, and children with speech, language and communication needs.

Module 5 

Exploring Language Beyond the Classroom

Explores parental involvement, family literacy and homework, as well as community initiatives that involve the provision of Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) in schools.
