The generic domain names (.com, .net and .org) are available on a "first come first serve basis" - no checking is done by the naming authority in respect of validity, business existence, trademark ownership or the identity of the registrant.

The Irish national primary domain (".ie") is issued subject to a series of restrictions. Full details of the guidelines that govern an applicant's eligibility for registering a particular name may be found here.The first step towards registering a domain name is checking to see that it is still available.
